I had never heard of Monte Vista, Colorado. Then the guys that run the Hot Rod Hill Climb announced they would be doing a new event called the Hot Rod Dirt Drags in that town. This was designed to bring together the same kind of crowd that attends their other popular event in Colorado. The crowd that attends the Hill Climb brings out the hopped-up 4-bangers, flathead V8s, and inline-6s and -8s. The hot rods come out in full force, the cool kats with the kustoms attend as well.
The day of the Dirt Drags event was absolutely perfect weather, even though the clouds loomed large. Not too hot, not too cold; just right! When 10:00 AM rolled around, some of the guys started making some test runs and by 10:45 it was on! The 40-foot wide 1/8 mile dirt strip was all action for a solid two hours. After a break for lunch, they got right back at it with grudge matches and this was a highlight, since during the weeks before, so much good natured smack talk had gone on the social media circles. Those that lost simply went back to the pits and settled down and said “next year…”
This was the consensus with all that attended the event: it will grow. With so much good word of mouth, it may be as big as the Hot Rod Hill Climb in its second year! This first year saw over 250 attendees from distant states such as Mississippi, California, Texas, Florida, Alabama, and states much closer as well.

For those in the Midwest, this is a can’t miss event. Every picture taken was a postcard with the mountains in the background. The Friday night party hosted at the Movie Manor was a great way to start the weekend, followed up by live bands, vendors, and good times on Saturday. Make plans to hit the Hot Rod Dirt Drags next year, it is worth the trip. Details can be found at www.hotroddirtdrags.com.
